Selected Works

Ling Gui International Healing Qigong School

Working with my Qigong teacher Master Liu He and her assistant Polly toward creating a beautiful new website was an absolute honor. Their original website had been created in the early 2000s and still reflected the designs of that time. Working with Sarah Rayne, we created designs based on research that guided us in creating a responsive, quickly loaded, highly customizable, and beautiful Wordpress template for their needs. To accomplish their many business goals for the website we included an interactive calendar for their courses, an eccomerce solution, a practitioner directory, and an integration with Constant Contact. Sarah Rayne also created a new logo, fresh brand guidelines, new copy, and led Master Liu He on a magical photoshoot reflected in the beautiful images on the site.

Since completion Kat has continued to manage the website and digital infrastructure. This has included regular maintenance and updates, expanding features, fine tuning the design, and communicating with third party providers.

Paddle for Life

It was clear from the moment I met them that the board of Paddle for Life had a deep passion for both Dragon Boat racing and for helping their community. They needed a website that clearly showcased their values, educated the public about Dragon Boat racing, and clearly presented information on their next races. After understanding their needs and budget, as well as an initial site audit, we decided on a cost effective solution that focused better content organization, user flow, and improvements to their site performance.

To achieve this I kept them on Wordpress but built a new site architecture with a reliable, light weight, and easily customizable template with powerful plugins to give them such features as online payments. Significant time was spent crafting wireframes and user flows to provide roadmaps for the site's new content strategy. Finally all the pieces were put together as the content was developed and each page of the website was constructed.

Wildish Botanicals

Wildish Botanicals quickly became one of my favorite local businesses soon after moving to Southeast Portland. In response to a large uptick in online sales during the COVID-19 pandemic, owner Paul enlisted me to give the Shopify powered website some necessary improvements. We began with a complete audit of the site focusing on the design and user experience. With this information I made custom edits to the Liquid template and leveraged Shopify to improve the site architecture. Improvements to the checkout flow and the introduction of an alphabetical navigation in the store archives, among other improvements, helped smooth the friction in the buying process.

Later my collaborator and partner, Sarah Rayne, was hired by Paul to add a unique voice to the descriptions of the herbal products on the site. She drew on both of our experience as herbalists and herbal consumers in crafting the new copywriting.

"Working with Kat has been an absolute pleasure. They were very attentive, thorough, and communicative with my project. We were able to complete nearly all of my preferences, the only confines were of the software I chose to use. I'm very happy with Kat's service, and I will happily continue working with them. Highly recommended!"

Arts In Bushwick

When Arts in Bushwick needed to move hosting providers, I worked closely with their director to make sure that the process was as painless and affordable as possible. I educated them about the process, helped to select the best service for their needs, communicated directly with their previous host, and oversaw the transfer.

Once the transfer was complete, it was time for a fresh look for the organization's website to match their expanding focus. We weighed several options, including a custom built Wordpress theme, and decided that the best course of action was for me to guide Arts in Bushwick's team in setting up their site themselves. I took the time to teach Arts in Bushwick how to select a theme, how to compare the different styles of Wordpress editors, and finally how to create their site's pages. In the end, Arts in Bushwick walked away with a fresh website and the knowledge and empowerment needed to maintain their site for years to come.

Jewish Foundation for the Righteous

Through Suits & Sandals, I personally developed and helped to maintain the website of this amazing non-profit for over five years while nurturing a loving and respectful relationship with its management team.

JFR.org is built with a fully custom Wordpress theme that uses several post types designed to collect the brave stories of those who rescued Jewish peoples during the holocaust as well as other types of content. In particular, the site features a fully custom e-card system and a connection to Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge system.

Equip Data

From designing the database structure, to assisting with the UX, to leading the development team in production, I had a hand in every part of this year-long project. Equip Data, under CLASP's Efficiency for Access initiative, gives users access to invaluable information on sustainable appliances.

This project was built with several Node based micro-service APIs, a Node/Express.js public frontend, and a React-based admin management portal. The infrastucture is hosted on Kubernetes and uses MongoDB with Redis caching.
